Unveiling the Integrated Farming Revolution in Karbi Anglong, Assam

In May 2023, Mr. Soronsing Engti Kathar, the Village Headman of Langtuk Kathar village in East Karbi Anglong District of Assam, embarked on a transformative journey by participating in the Food Security Awareness Program organized by Jirsong Asong, the Diocesan Social Service Society of Diphu diocese under the FARM-NE Team’s initiative. This Organic Cultivation Exposure Visit highlighted the Integrated Farming system in Borlangpher at Manja, ignited a spark of inspiration within Mr. Kathar.

Driven by a newfound zeal, Mr. Kathar, and Mr. Rajen Rongphar, the two enthusiastic farmers harnessed the knowledge gained from the exposure tour to cultivate their one-acre land. With indigenous seed support from Jirsong Asong, they successfully grew various crops, doubling their income to Rs. 40,000. Encouraged by their success, they expanded their venture to another acre, increasing their revenue to Rs. 80,000.

Their remarkable progress didn’t stop there. Witnessing their success, five other farmers were inspired to join the agricultural movement. This ripple effect not only empowered these farmers economically but also revitalized the agricultural landscape of the region.

Buoyed by their achievements under the guidance of Mr. Kisso Teron, the dedicated Community Educator of FARM Northeast, embraced the vision of integrated farming. These farmers diversified to include livestock, beekeeping, and fisheries, envisioning a comprehensive Integrated Farming System (IFS). With unwavering commitment, they sought technical assistance from Jirsong Asong to realize their vision.

The impact of their initiative reverberated further when Mr. Mathew, another farmer inspired by their success, embarked on his journey toward model farming. With three acres of land dedicated to this endeavor, he envisions a holistic approach to agriculture, encompassing diverse crops and sustainable practices.

Facilitated by Mr. Teron, Mr. Mathew’s endeavor is a testament to the enduring impact of knowledge dissemination and community empowerment. The FARM NE team of Jirsong Asong stands as a steadfast ally, providing crucial support and guidance to these pioneering farmers.

As we witness this grassroots movement unfold, it becomes evident that the seeds of change sown by individuals like Mr. Kathar, Mr. Rongphar, and Mr. Mathew have the potential to transform not only livelihoods but also entire communities. Through collective effort and unwavering determination, they exemplify the spirit of rural empowerment and sustainable development.
