The search for food is over for the next two months

“Every day I would go out on a quest to look for people who distribute food and bring back whatever I get for my children”, says Triveni, a widow and mother of three girls.

Triveni’s husband committed suicide during the COVID-19 lockdown, he was the only breadwinner of the family. After his demise, the family went into a shock as they did not know what to do next.

Triveni desperately started looking for a job and after a profound search, she managed to get a job as a domestic help within her vicinity. But that too could not last for a month, as the country underwent a total lockdown due to COVID-19.

“With no source of income, food, and responsibilities of three daughters, these three months have been extremely tough for me”, says Triveni. She had no other option but to look for some kindhearted people who could give her some food.

“I wish to get poison, I want to die, I don’t know how to handle this situation, I am alone, this Corona…(she cries and stopped conversation)”, expressed Triveni with the Nagpur Multipurpose Social Service Society (NMSSS) team during the assessment home visit. She also expresses her worry over her daughters’ education, “How can I manage this thing, I don’t have money”.

Caritas India and HCL Foundation have opened the window for destitute and economically weaker section of the society especially families that are surviving on daily wages. This project helps the impoverished and daily wagers to survive during COVID-19 lockdown.

Triveni was identified and supported with food and hygiene kit under this project through the NMSSS. This project provides food and hygiene support to such families who have lost their employment opportunities and struggling to survive in this difficult situation.

In a conversation with one of the volunteers, during the distribution process, Triveni stated, “After the loss of my husband, I didn’t have any idea how I would be able to take care of my daughters. His death has left us all in a state of shock but thanks to you for your help and support”. Triveni had tears of joy in her eyes when she received her food and hygiene kit from Caritas India & HCL Foundations, she expressed her sense of relief and gratitude as she would not have to run helter-skelter in search of food at least for the next two months.

In Nagpur, Caritas India and HCL Foundation are supporting 800 vulnerable families with Food and Hygiene kit. This the same number which is supported by these organisations in Pune, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
