Rebuilding lives: Disaster relief to sustainable development

The aftermath consequences of the Assam floods continue to persist especially in the vulnerable section of the population. Although the number of people affected by the flood water has now reduced to 8000 according to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), lakhs of people are struggling hard to rebuild their lives that were washed by a calamity the scale of which they never witnessed before. Thousands more are in need of basic amenities such as clean drinking water, shelter and sanitation and thus are heavily reliant on relief materials.

Caritas India’s team has been on the ground zero since day one, rigorously pooling resources, manpower and funds to pull the vulnerable people out of their misery. Our approach has been to not only support victims with a basic supply of food, and materials but to help them in rebuilding their lives in their entirety.

We are continuing our service of providing relief in terms of WaSH, food and shelter kits. We are simultaneously working on WaSH promotion by carrying out hand pump cleaning/repairs and awareness generation for the masses.

On 22nd July, Caritas India along with ADRA India participated in the inception workshop organized by ECHO for Assam Flood Response 2022. The project kicked off and an orientation workshop took place at Silchar, Assam. With the help of ECHO, Caritas India will be supporting around 12000 Households in Silchar which are most affected due to floods with Fund transfer and hygiene kit distribution.

As on 29th July 2022, Caritas India has completed 99 transfers in Battalmara and Bhattgram villages and has distributed 50 hygiene kits in Sinduara village. Caritas India will also carry out Toilet repairs and  WASH Promotion in these villages in the coming phase of the response.

Caritas India continues to distribute relief items to the flood-affected families in West Karbi Anglong district. With the support of Siemens, we have distributed 645 hygiene kits and 888 Shelter kits as of date. The distribution will continue in the district of West Karbi Anglong. With this support, Caritas India has reached more than 4000 individuals.

Since the Assam Flood response began, Caritas India has distributed 3991 hygiene kits as it emerged as the most immediate need of the affected families. We have also distributed 907 Food kits, and 888 shelter kits and have cleaned 7 handpumps altogether. We have reached out to around 25000 families with our support. Our mission to support the most vulnerable will continue in the affected districts in the coming days.
