Promoting self-reliance by Empowering People with Disabilities Through Livelihood Support

In pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the global commitment to ‘leave no one behind’ necessitates a dedicated focus on economic empowerment, especially for those often marginalized – people living with disabilities. Caritas India Community Based Rehabilitation (CI CBR) emerges as a catalyst, diligently working to fulfill this commitment by fostering self-reliance among people with disabilities through innovative livelihood support initiatives.

The vulnerabilities and neglect faced by people with disabilities make them one of the most marginalized segments of society. Battling discrimination, stigma, and limited participation in their communities, they often find themselves excluded socially and financially. The absence of local livelihood opportunities exacerbates their challenges, leaving them dependent on family members for survival.

Limited livelihood options and dependence on agriculture or the informal economy further compound the struggles of people with disabilities. A lack of skills and employment opportunities perpetuates the perception of them being unproductive and dependent. CI CBR recognizes these challenges and addresses them head-on, working towards transforming the lives of individuals like Nasir from Nuh district in Haryana.

Nasir, a 21-year-old with a locomotor disability, faced the common plight of lacking education and skills, hindering his employment prospects. CI CBR stepped in, facilitating documentation that secured him a monthly disability pension. Inclusion in a local Self-Help Group (SHG) for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) opened doors for Nasir. With CI CBR’s support, he received training and a livelihood support fund of Rs. 15,000. Today, Nasir successfully runs his own fast-food centre, earning Rs. 500 per day and achieving his dream of entrepreneurship.

Similarly, Jonnada Raju from Andhra Pradesh, certified with 90% locomotor disability, faced discrimination and hardships from an early age. CI CBR played a pivotal role in Raju’s journey, providing a three-wheeler for improved mobility and financial support to establish a computer centre. Through acquired soft skills and online services, Raju not only transformed his life but also became a valuable contributor to his community.

The impact of CI CBR’s efforts extends beyond individual success stories. In 2020-21, during the post-Covid period, 220 people with disabilities in the northeast region were supported with Rs.22,00,000 for starting livestock management activities. In 2023-24 alone, 116 individuals received support for various income-generating activities, with a total disbursement of Rs.8,26,610 through CI’s livelihood support fund.

These seemingly modest efforts, when viewed collectively, bring about transformative changes in the lives of people with disabilities and their families. CI CBR is not just providing financial assistance; it is instilling self-confidence, motivation, and a sense of contribution among individuals who were once considered dependents. The increased visibility of these empowered individuals in their villages is a testament to the profound impact of CI CBR’s commitment to fostering a better future for people with disabilities.
