Fostering a Healthier Future: Leveraging National Deworming Festival to improve children’s health

In a significant initiative towards eradicating malnutrition in Korku-dominated villages of Khandwa and Amravati, Caritas India’s Sabal program organized the transformative National Deworming Festival on February 10th, 2024. This initiative, extending across 21 villages, reaches beyond the conventional scope of deworming, embodying a holistic approach to fortifying food and nutrition security.

Sabal’s multidisciplinary approach, working in collaboration with local organizations like Khandwa Diocesan Social Services, Dayasagar Social Centre, Matruschaya Social Welfare Centre, and Jeevan Vikas Sansthan, tailors interventions to meet the unique needs of the Korku community.

The festival, themed “Healthy Children, Happy Family: Building Stronger Communities,” garnered participation from over 2,500 individuals, including 1,855 children, 482 mothers, and adolescent girls, along with representatives from schools, Anganwadi centers, and local government bodies.
An Anganwadi worker from Washim shared her perspective, stating, “As an Anganwadi worker, I’ve witnessed the positive impact of Sabal’s multidisciplinary approach on child health and hygiene. The National Deworming Festival has been a collaborative effort that has truly empowered our community.”

A total of 1,956 children underwent profiling and received deworming treatment during the festival, effectively combating parasitic infections that impede health and development. Simultaneously, Sabal instilled awareness of hygiene and sanitation practices, installing 129 low-cost handwashing stations in program households.

Sunita, a mother from Girgutti village, expressed her gratitude, saying, “The handwashing stations provided by Sabal have significantly improved our daily hygiene practices. We now feel more confident about our children’s health.”

Through its community-centric and multidisciplinary approach, Sabal is not only addressing immediate health challenges but also laying the foundation for long-term well-being and development. By prioritizing the health and nutrition security of the Korku community, Sabal is paving the way for a brighter, healthier future for generations to come. This collaborative effort, encompassing deworming, hygiene awareness, and sanitation practices, stands as a testament to the power of community engagement in driving positive change.
