Cultivating the Scientific Spirit, Khushaal Bachpan commemorates National Science Day 2024

Caritas India’s Khushaal Bachpan programme, commemorated the National Science Day, on 28th of February, across the ten districts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh This year’s thematic resonance echoed the imperative need for “Indigenous Technology for Viksit Bharat,” providing a unique platform for children to unleash their creativity and contribute to something extraordinary.

In Bastar, the celebration unfolded at Gram Panchayat Cherakur, where children showcased a diverse array of models at an exhibition. The children crafted working models such as Water Dispenser, Water Pumping System, Moving Chandrayaan, Swing, and stationary models like Solar System, Ships, and Satellite, that were not merely recognized but celebrated, receiving accolades for the top three in each category. The focal point of the event was the children’s presentations, marking the culmination of their ingenuity. The quiz competition at both school and district levels brought recognition to the brightest minds, further reinforcing the commitment to nurturing scientific curiosity. The presence of esteemed educators from various villages added an extra layer of significance to the program, which witnessed the gathering of more than 255 people.

Jashpur saw an enthusiastic participation of students and teachers in a science quiz competition held at Govt. Middle School. A total of 52 participants engaged in the creation of science models for National Science Day, embracing the opportunity to learn and showcase their newfound knowledge.

In Raigarh, the celebration unfolded with students from nine schools actively participating. The event featured an engaging science model demonstration, a quiz competition, and an interactive learning experience. Judges assessed each model, and prizes were awarded to the best performers, fostering a sense of achievement among the students and acknowledging the dedicated efforts of their teachers.

Udaipur played host to an informative celebration of Science Day, featuring a quiz competition that added a competitive edge with 65 children participating. Encouraging the spirit of inquiry, prizes were distributed to commend the top achievers, motivating them to pursue scientific exploration.

Raipur took Science Day to Gram Panchayat Pachari. Models ranging from Chandrayaan and rainwater harvesting to the digestive system and solar system were exhibited, depicting the depth of scientific understanding among the students. The event incorporated a quiz competition, highlighting the commitment to both theoretical knowledge and practical application. “Science is my favourite subject in class, so I enjoyed the process of making the project, it also increased my knowledge in the subject matter,” said Rahul, the boy behind the model of Chandaryan.

Surguja marked the occasion with a cluster-level children’s science fair, where 12 schools participated with an impressive array of models. The chief guest presided over the event, evaluating the models and acknowledging the efforts of the young minds. Cultural programs and sports activities were woven into the fabric of the fair, emphasizing the importance of science in an interactive and dynamic manner.

In Jhabua, a gathering of more than 250 community members, accompanied by over 170 children, witnessed a symphony of scientific exploration. The event saw the participation of key community figures, including Sarpanch, Sachiv, Agriculture Officer, School Principals, Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) Members, and School Management Committee (SMC) members. Guided by academic mentors, the children created functional prototypes of an ATM Machine, Windmill, and Irrigation System, exemplifying a practical grasp of scientific principles. An engaging exhibition provided a platform for the children to articulate their vision, where they explained the intricacies of their models to the guests and visitors. A parent visiting the exhibition expressing his feelings said “This is the first time in my life I have seen the kids in my community showcasing their talent through such creative science models, I feel very happy and proud of them”.

These National Science Day celebrations underscore the importance of cultivating a scientific temperament among children. Beyond the festivities, they impart invaluable lessons to young participants—lessons in creativity, innovation, and the boundless possibilities within the realm of science. Through hands-on experiences and collaborative efforts, these celebrations contribute to the collective journey of these children, fostering increased confidence and diminishing any apprehensions they may have about science as a subject.
