CHAYA PROJECT -Responding to Heatwave in Rajasthan

About the Programme: 

As the title of the project depicts “Chaya” a shed from the extreme heat, this project has been implemented in 50 villages of Barmer and Banswara districts. The summer of this year has been very harsh and unusual high temperature were recorded in most of the districts of Rajasthan including Barmer and Banswara that witnessed 46.5 degree as highest in the month of May, 2022. Considering the population exposure and impact of heat wave on sectors including health, power supply, agriculture, environment and the economy in the state of Rajasthan there is an urgent need to create awareness and sensitise the larger population about dos and don’ts, safety measures and providing relief to the vulnerable groups including the homeless and needy. Caritas India has conducted a secondary analysis of the heat wave situation. The situation and problem analysis further shaped the response plan on the following objectives.

  1. Sensitization & increased community awareness on increasing level of heat, the reasons being climate change, what and why of climate change, and sensitise them regarding the precautions that need to be taken.
  2. Reducing risk of heat stroke through shelter assistance for the homeless, migrant labourer and slum dwellers
  3. Development of a concrete document on heat wave and its best practices

After the assessment Caritas India started immediate intervention such as cooling centre in urban area for farmers and rural folk who visits these places daily by providing them with a cool place to relax and rest, ORS and primary health services, Refreshment and Lunch to the most needy and drinking water and health drink to all during the day time, heat resistance paint, tarpaulin sheet, ORS sachet and drinking water to the people affected by Heat Wave.

Highlights of the Program: 

  • Emergency cooling centre were setup and run successfully for 20 days of extreme heat in May and June 2022
  • Relief services of Cooling centre reached out to 1987 people.
  • 292 Tarpaulin sheets was distributed to most affected and vulnerable population in Udaipur, In Ajmir, 100 tarpaulin sheets are about to be distributed.
  • 100 families received supports of Heat reflected paints to reduce the heat in Udaipur, Rajasthan and 100 in Ajmir
  • Distributed ORS to 31 Creches in Udaipur, totally 930 children were benefitted
  • Secretary of Krishi Upaj Mandi Mr. Suresh Mangal, SBI Bank Manager and RSETI representatives appreciated the effort of Caritas India and RCDSSS.
  • Youtube, news paper and new channel media covered the initiative very well, that increases the visibility.

Impact

  • We were the one and only organization who worked to respond the heatwave emergency in the district. This was acknowledged by govt. officials, media and other community members who visited the cooling centre and learned about the other intervention under Chaya project.
  • 1987 people got relief and minimized the risk and exposure of heatwave and health complications.
  • ORS gave relief to beat the heat stroke and dehydration.
  • Heal reflective paint and tarpaulin sheets reduced heat at houses during the time of heat wave and summer
  • 1500 Households benefitted in Udhaipur, Banswara district through water supply, it has improved the intake of water during the summer and reduced the impact of dehydration
  • ORS was distributed to 31 anganwadies in Banswara District, 930 Children received ORS during the summer, it has rehydrated during the time of heat wave and reduced risk getting dehydration.
