Reaching to the hard-hit transgender community with Food support

Transgenders are one of the hard-hit communities impacted severely by the lockdown. The only source of their income is through performance in social gathering or begging, which is now curtailed completely in this lockdown. A vast majority of transgender in Kerala are in an extremely difficult situation as their food supplies are depleting and their money exhausted.

Samridhy Diocesan Social Service Society of Muvattupuzha Diocese in Kerala came forward to support this community through their Samridhy Suraksha Trans Gender Program. It is an intervention to reach out to the Trans genders of Kottayam district, especially in the Kottayam Municipality area. They joined hands with Kottayam Municipality and other Charitable and Humanity Organizations and discussed the possible ways of intervention to tackle this health emergency.

Samridhy identified different vulnerable communities to distribute various essential commodities and food packets in the Kottayam Municipality area. They created awareness by educating the most vulnerable communities like Trans Genders on the isolation, quarantine, lockdown, and behavior change measures to break the chain of Coronavirus.

In collaboration with the Health Department, the team organized the Corona awareness class for the Transgender Community in Kottayam District on March 16, 2020, at the Rural Health Mission hall. Around 60 transgenders attended this awareness programme led by District Medical Officer Dr. Gangadharan along with his team Deputy DMO Ms. Anitha and District TB Officer Dr. Twinkle Prabhakaran.

Apart from the support of Kottayam Municipality, District Medical Office Kottayam, District TB Office Kottayam, Ashraya Charitable Trust, and other Humanitarian groups extended support to this community with Food kits, Food Packets, Dry Ration, etc. The timely and empathetic intervention of Samridhy was much appreciated by the trans genders community.
