Nabeeza regains a part of her life after floods

Nabeeza is a widow from Chulikka hamlet, Vellarmala village of Meppady Panchayat of Wayanad District. She is a homemaker, who lives with her son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren. Her daughter who is expecting a child is also staying with her at present.

During the floods, her home which is situated between the hills in a low-lying region was subjected to flooding as the water from emerging streams slowly seeped in through the floors. Water from the high ranges also flowed downhill and insidiously cut off her home from the rest of the village. Her small and unfinished home would not be able to withstand the flood waters, leaving Nabeeza with no choice but to evacuate with nothing more than the clothes on her back. She moved into one of the local relief camps with some of her neighbours.

After the water receded and the relief camp closed, Nabeeza returned to an empty house, as all her household belongings had been washed away in the flood. She was left with the task of restoring all her lost belongings and see to daily household requirements and the health of her pregnant daughter. The floods had not only left them with nothing but also affected her son’s livelihood.

Him being a daily wage worker was unable to go to work on account of the devastation of the floods. This left her and her family with absolutely no hope of survival. With the support of Caritas India, she was able to recover some of the basic household items, like Clothing, bedsheets, mosquito nets, Water buckets, and hygiene items. She was able to restore some normalcy back to her life.

“I am happy that Caritas India has helped me regain a part of life,” She said.
