Gender Justice

Caritas India, the developmental wing of the Catholic Church in India, has always searched for avenues to make her presence felt in the hearts of the economically, socially and culturally marginalized through her partners wherever it operates.

Envisioning the formation of a just and sustaining social order, where the Gospel values of love, equality and peace are nurtured and lived, her mission is to restore the human dignity of the excluded and marginalized in society through the process of their involvement in collective decision making, action and reflection.

Caritas India is committed to gender Justice

Caritas India’s commitment to Gender justice is rooted in the biblical vision of the wholesome human being, created in the image and likeness of God. It is built on a holistic spirituality that integrates all the dimensions of human existence and blends the material and spiritual dimensions of life. Hence, our goal is to build “A society where men and women enjoy equal status, valuing the differences”.

This commitment is derived from the fact that gender inequality is about unequal power relations between men and women, amongst women and amongst men. Despite explicit Global commitment for more than three decades, Gender inequality is very evident in every domain and persists in both overt and covert forms. It gets reflected in socio-economic, politico-cultural arenas. Inequality of any kind is an obstacle to progress and human development. Therefore, it is our core responsibility to ensure that vulnerable and disadvantaged section of the society particularly most vulnerable among the vulnerables (women and most excluded) benefit from all our initiatives across various focus areas of poverty reduction, prevention of unsafe migration and human Trafficking, disaster risk reduction and management, climate change, environmental sustainability, HIV/AIDS reduction in spread and stigma, and democratic governance.

To contribute to the goal set, Caritas India believes in and

1.     Recognizes that gender sensitive intervention as well as gender specific interventions can promote gender equality and Justice.

2.     Support projects that contribute to reducing gender inequalities.

3.     Support organizations that work with women and people belonging to excluded groups.

To achieve these objectives Caritas India focuses on

·        Engendering organization through gender sensitive norms, procedures, practices

·        Integrating gender perspectives in all our interventions

·        Develop Partners capacity to be able to integrate gender perspectives within their organization and their interventions.
