The Archdiocese of Bhopal was erected on September 13,1963. It set up the Asha Niketan Welfare Centre (ANWC) the following year to undertake social works.Problem area being addressed The programme envisaged the project matching the groups’ savings. This would help the villagers take up income generating projects on a larger scale and improve their livelihood. This would also enable the families to cut free from the clutches of landlords and moneylenders and regain their self-dignity and esteem in society. ? Results / Change expected through this intervention 75 groups undertook various IGP activities thus increasing their income, savings, and assets and reducing their debt. ? Specific nature of the beneficiary community and the relevance of this intervention The beneficiaries were mainly tribals, SC and OBC communities, besides a few general category people from about 75 villages in Hoshangabad, Bhopal and Sehore district. Most of these people were marginal farmers and landless labourers living below the poverty line. But they have developed the habit of saving regularly within the group. This intervention helped develop strong self help groups in the villages. They took up various kinds of income generating programmes, carefully assessing how the programmes would benefit their members. Each group invested almost an equal amount to the project investment so that the people also share the risk of the IGP activity. Wherever possible they tried to use the govt. resources. ? A word about the partner / NGO – as an organisation This Diocesan Social Service Society has been involved in this programme for more than a year. It has selected the beneficiaries with greater caution because of the risk involved in the IGP activities. However most groups supported the programme. They have produced profits and ensure timely repayments of their loans.
