Liberty, Equality and Fraternity are the thirst of every soul that inhabits this planet. Vaduvamma 55, a Dalit and a bonded labourer, toiling in the salt pans, crushed by debt, is no exception.
The salt pans inundated by sea water and littered with debris snatched her sole source of income, again sucking her into the vicious cycle of debt, forcing her back into bondage, for a pittance of a loan. For Vaduvamma the tsunami has ushered in hope and dreams of a new dawn of freedom and hope. Caritas India has built 105 new houses in her village – Poovanthopu.
Vaduvamma has moved into her new house and is now employed by the construction company, earning Rs.70 per day. She has hope, as Caritas India is working along with the community to explore alternative livelihoods so people like Vaduvamma can taste freedom from bondage – from saltpans and elsewhere!
