“Caritas India is the shining witness of the Church in India”, said His Eminence Varkey Cardinal Vithayathil, President of Caritas India.
In a meeting of the Caritas Council held at New Delhi on 23 April 2008, he said, “we should stand to bridge the gap between the poor and the rich and take a stand for the issues of the poor”.
Several Cardinals, Archbishops and bishops from all over the country, were a part of this meeting.
During the meeting, issues related to the organisation were taken up for discussion, a Workplace Policy on HIV and AIDS was also presented for approval.
Cardinal Vithayathil, who is the president of the CBCI Standing Committee, also served as the Chairman of Caritas India for 4 years in the past. His observation is significant as it comes at a time when Caritas India is experiencing a transformation to a more professional and effective approach in reaching the poorest of the poor in the country.
Also present at the meeting were the members of the Governing Board of Caritas India.
The Governing Board meeting was held in New Delhi from 21-22 April 2008.
